Augustus John British 1878-1961

Augustus John was a painter and print maker. Born in Tenby, Wales ,he later attended the Slade School 1894-8. In his final year at the Slade he visited Paris, after which he returned there every year. In 1901 he married Ida Nettleship and got a job teaching art at Liverpool University, later becoming the Professor of Painting there until 1904. In 1903 John met Dorelia McNiel who came and lived with him and Ida in a ménage-á-trois, until the death of Ida in 1907. From the years 1911-14, John worked with Innesa and Lees in Wales. In 1921 he was elected member ARA, in 1928 elected RA, however in 1938 he resigned only to be re-elected in 1940. He was a member of the London group from 1940 until his death in 1961.In 1942 John was awarded the OM .John lived in Mallord St, Chelsea.
