TAPLIN, Guy

Guy Taplin   (British 1939-  )

Guy Taplin sculptor born in London, sculptor of birds. He began carving woodland birds based on American decoys when working in Regent’s Park as a labourer and gardener. He began selling them and was featured in Crafts Magazine. Four years later, due to the success, he dedicated his full time to being a sculptor.

He presently lives in Essex. His workshop is on a beach at the head of two tidal estuaries, the Blackwater and the Colne. Surrounded by birds and deposited driftwood to make his sculptures. He finds that this kind of material has a special significance because it has had a life before he creates his bird forms. Weathered by time and the elements, each piece of wood bears marks that enhance his design.

He has numerous exhibitions in London and internationally, his fans include Joanne Lumley, Ridley Scott and Michael Palin.
