Description: Published by J. Read, 1734-1735. 2 volume set. Folio. Author believed to be John Mottley, under the pseudonym of Robert Seymour. Folio. 2 volume set. Bound in original full leather bindings. Vol I – 822pp. Vol II – 918pp. Collated and complete. One map and nine engravings as listed in the collection of the Welcome Institute. Volume one has 822pp and illustrated with wood engravings showing the old gate houses plus copper engravings of the following: Map of London, Southwark West, London Bridge, Bethlem Hospital, Tower of London, Royal Exchanges, Monument to fire of London, Guildhall, St. Pauls and All Hallows, Bread street . Volume two has 918pp and many wood engravings showing the arms of Companies and one copper engraving of Westminster Abbey. Binding is in poor condition. Although it appears to have been rebound in the Victorian period using the original boards with a new spine, both boards are now detached yet again,revealing the original leather spine. Leather has disintegrated. Both front covers have the ex libris plate Secus Rivos Aquarum of the Rivers family , possibly baronet of Chafford, Kent. Inside however, the text and engravings, although toned, and discoloured due to age are in very good order with just the occasional foxing. Scarce. A very through survey covering the history from medieval times, the different trades in the city, types of commerce (a sentence mentioning the slave trade) , the different churches and the monuments within, charities and their donors, types of insects found, etc. laws affecting trade. Size 40 x 27cm 13cm height (16 x 11 inches x 5 inches height) Weight 7.5 kilos.
