Large 8vo. First edition thus. Original deep red linson boards pictorially blocked and lettered in gilt to spine and upper cover, pictorial endpapers, top edges red, with the pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii], + 191; with 16 full colour plates and line drawings throughout. Inscribed by illustrator ‘For Oliver & Jessica from Edward Ardizzone Nov.14th’ . On verso of front front end paper is the Surrealist bookplate of Andrew Murray. Minimal wear to dust wrapper, else fine copy.

An attractive collection of Hans Andersen’s most popular tales, including The Princess and the Pea; The Little Mermaid; The Emperor’s New Clothes, Thumbelina; The Snow Queen; The Ugly Duckling and The Tinder Box. This was Ardizzone’s final title. Edward Ardizzone was working on illustrations for it when he died, leaving artwork uncompleted on his drawing board.
