In the first two letters, he writes lovingly of Jacque getting better & how difficult it is being without her. Of preparing The Tower for her arrival. In the 1950 letter he writes, ‘I am still with ‘Mrs Fisher’ – (she is divorced now). It is almost impossible to explain how I am placed….in a letter. I had to write to you….the obstacles have been and are so big between us….I’ve been terrified I may hurt you again….I still say I never drew anyone like I draw Jacque. That is because no-one ever got so deep into my life and work and everything I did….’. A mounted b/w photograph of Berlin circa 1950.
