‘My father’s involvement with surrealism began when he was invited by Bill Hayter to join his Atelier 17 late in 1933 or early 1934. Hayter wrote of that time ‘he was a finished craftsman as well as a brilliant artist. In the studio he was responsible for many of the technical innovations which have been disseminated in most countries’ .. ‘His command of the burin was outstanding, and although Hayter’s influence is evident, it is subordinated to Buckland Wright’s romantic temperament portrayed in the engravings seen here for ‘Baigneuse et Satyre ‘ and in ….’ Christopher Buckland Wight August 1999 Excerpt from ‘ John Buckland Wright .The Surrealist Years 1934-1954’ published by Wolsey Fine Arts 1999
