Reference: Black 48. Black states that the print was ‘first exhibited at the Keppel Gallleries, New York, May 1919 (40) edition of 25. Related work: oil on canvas, 1917, 50.8 x 61, April 1916. Neveins’s stylised treatment of the tress is reminiscent of the objects in the foreground of Giacomo Balla’s ‘Battleships +Windows+Wind’ (1918, oil on canvas, Ludwig Museum ,Cologne). The image suggests that nature remains militarised, subject to the relentless mechanised rhythms of the Great War.’
