The wood engraving was originally cut for Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ published by ‘The Golden Cockerel Press in 1929. The edition was number 63 in the publications of the Golden Cockerel Press. The woodcut was subsequently printed from the original woodblock, page 44, for the Douglas Cleverdon edition ‘Engravings 1928-1933 by Eric Gill’, printed by Gill and Hague, published by Faber & Faber Ltd in 1934. This edition is rare and was printed in a small edition size.
