Description

Eric Gill woodengraving for Chaucer’ Canterbury Tales. Printed by Gill and Hague from the original block in 1934. Unsigned as issued in the Douglas Cleverdon edition ‘Engravings 1928-1933 by Eric Gill’ . The sheet is some light foxing in the margins and one very faint fox mark near the image which is diffcilut to photograph, else good.

The wood engraving wasmade for page 31, volume 1 of Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’, published by The Golden Cockerel Press,1929.The woodcut was printed from the original woodblock for the Douglas Cleverdon edition ‘Engravings 1928-1933 by Eric Gill’, page 26, printed by Gill and Hague, published by Faber & Faber Ltd in 1934. This edition is rare and was printed in a small edition size.
