GILL, Eric

Eric Gill copper engraving ‘Madonna and Child’ Signed

Description

Eric Gill copper engraving of a Madonna and Child signed ‘Eric G’ and numbered 40/ 50 copies by the artist in fine pencil. There is an old price of £1-8s in lower left corner but Physick states that Gill sold these at 5 shillings, therefore the price is a later addition. Printed on thick wove paper. The pressure of the plate onto the paper has weakened the sheet along the edges which is more noticeable when held up the the light. The sheet has a grey spot in top margin, some light spotting on the image and sellotape residue along top and bottom margins from when it was attached to a backing board. Else a very acceptable and rare signed engraving by Gill.Sold not mounted, as shown.

Size 83 x 46mm [3 1/4 x 1 7/8 inches]

Sheet Size 160 x 130 mm [6 1/2 x 5 inches]
