A proof wood engraving originally cut in 1923, printed on thick wove paper. UNSIGNED. In good condition. Framed in a black hand made wooden frame.
Plate size 115 x 105mm (4 3/8 x 4 inches)
Sheet size 145 x 145mm (5.5 x 5.5 inches)
Based on a photograph published in The Daily Mirror, 1923. It is possible that it was a printers proof or even a proof that Gill printed as the paper is quite different to the paper used in the Cleverdon 1929 edition. The block was subsequently used in ‘Wood-Engravings’, No.44 of the publications of the St.Dominic’s Press’, 1924; as plate 52 in ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Cleverdon 1929.
