Eric Gill signed wood engraving ‘Child in Bed’



Eric Gill wood engraving made in 1916. Not numbered but signed in pencil ‘Eric G’. Trimmed close to the margins. Glued at top edged to a sheet of hand made paper. The backing sheet has toned due to being in contact with an acidic board with a little foxing near the wood engraving, but the paper with the wood engraving is still bright and in good condition. Not mounted/ matted.

Sheet size 4.1 x 4.3cm; (1.75 x 1 .75 inches)

Backing sheet 26 x 20cm (10 x 7.75 inches)

Reference: Physick 68: Made in 1916. Physick states the wood engraving was used as an illustration on page 4 of ‘Concerning Dragons’, a rhyme by Pepler, No.9 of the publications of St. Dominic’s Press, Ditchling, Sussex, 1916. The block was subsequently used for illustration on page 22 of ‘God and the Dragon’, rhymes by Peplar, St. Dominic’s Press publication. Number 15, 1917; On page 28 of ‘Nisi Dominus’ rimes by Pepler  publication Number 29, 1919.
