Item details

Reference Physick 787 (483)
Proof for the initial A used on page 122 of ‘The Four Gospels’. No.78 of the publications of the Golden Cockerel Press, 1931. The block was subsequently used for illustration on Plate 85 of Engravings 1928-1933 by the artist, printed by Messrs.Hague and Gill, published by Faber & Faber Ltd. 1934.

The sheet really consists of two wood engravings printed on one sheet. ‘The Cock and Spear’ which is listed in the Physick number 787, size stated 2.25 x 2.25 inches. This wood engraving was published in the 1934 edition of the Engravings on page 85 published by Cleverdon. The other wood engraving is an initial ‘A’ is a separate block printed alongside it, possibly also cut for ‘The Four Gospels’. Consequently there is a discrepancy with the Physick listing with the size measurements as he only mentions the details for the image with the Cock and Spear.
