Eric Gill wood engraving printed from the original woodblock for ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. One of 400 copies printed on paper specially manufactured for this edition. With the number ‘3’ in top right corner as issued. In very good condition. Not mounted/ matted or framed.

Reference: Physick 31, Ditchling 29, 3.  Design for printing on paper bags for the Hampshire House Bakery, Doves Place, Hammersmith, 1915. The block was subsequently used for illustration on the back cover of ‘A Statement of Aim’ issued by Hampshire House Workshops, No.8 of the publications of the St. Dominic’s Press, Ditchling, Sussex, 1916; on the page 19 of ‘Wood-engravings’ St. Dominic’s Press publication no.44; as Plate 3 of  for  ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929; as the frontispiece to the American edition of ‘ Social Justice and The Stations of the Cross’ published by sower Press 1944. There were also 10 proofs signed in an edition of 10. The primarily drawings, dated 22 December 1927 for this portrait is reproduced as Pl.37 of Eric gill’ by James Thorpe, 1929.
