Eric Gill wood engraving ‘Madonna and Child, with Children (2nd state).’ signed and numbered.

Description

Eric Gill wood engraving made in 1923. Printed on handmade mulberry paper, numbered 33/50 and signed in pencil ‘Eric G’. With large margins. Some tape on verso where the sheet has been attached to the mount/ mat, one light fold in top right corner, else very good. I have taken photographs of the back of the sheet and a photograph showing that the paper is indeed hand made.

Block size 9.5 x 6cm ((3.75 x 2.25 inches)

Sheet size  18 x 18cm (7 x 7 inches)

Reference: Physick 341 , 79 Proof, 1925.The second state was subsequently used for illustration on Plate 79 in   ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. There was also an edition of 50 signed wood engravings of which this is one.
