Description

Portrait of the cookery writer and wife of Thomas Lowinsky, close friends of the family. An original wood engraving printed from the original block for ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’.  Initialled in reverse to lower corner of margin in plate. Published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. One of 400 copies printed on paper specially manufactured for this edition with the number ‘63’ in top right corner as issued. Very good. Not mounted / matted.

Reference: Physick 277 , Ditchling 6, 63 .  Portrait, head and shoulders, looking to the left. 1924. The block was subsequently used for illustration on plate 63 in  ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. Signed in reverse.  The artist refers to this engraving to the Rev Desmond Chute, dated 12th September 1924 in ‘Letters of Eric Gill‘, published 1947.
