Description

An original wood engraving printed from the original block for ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’.  Published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. One of 400 copies printed on paper specially manufactured for this edition with the number ‘77’ in top right corner as issued. Very good. Not mounted / matted.

Reference: Reference Physick 337; Ditchling 60, 77:    Proof of an illustration intended for  ‘The Song of Songs’, number 31 of the publication of the Golden cockerel Press, 1925. The block was subsequently used for illustration on plate 77 of  ‘Engravings by Eric Gill’, published by Douglas Cleverdon, printed by The Fanfare Press, 1929. Also titled ‘Shepherd & ‘Shigs’ (Wood). There was also a signed and numbered edition of 60 copies .
