Provenance: Purchased at Chiswick Auction House circa 2005.
Ewen Henderson combined coils and slabs together whilst building a piece making the form very free and experimental with using different clay bodies, some with high shrinkage, and others with low. I suspect the glaze was thickly hand painted on to the piece rather than spray glazed and fired to stoneware temperature, 1260 centigrade.
Being my tutor whilst at Camberwell, he was instrumental in me becoming a hand builder. I remember he was always in the kiln room waiting for the doors to open to see the next experimental glaze piece coming out whilst still hot. He was very interested in volcanic glazes.
