Francis Bott ‘Schwebendes Monument’ pastel drawing (H627)

Description

Francis Bott pastel drawing which is titled ‘Schwebendes Monument’. The drawing is signed and dated 1960 in pencil and is drawn on thin paper which is attached to card at corners with tape. The sheet has a tiny tear in image with the paper still intact, else in good condition.

In the 1930’s-40’s Bott exhibited at the Galerie Maeght Surrealist  show organised by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. However, after 1948 Bott’s work transformed into abstraction and he was showing alongside Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung and Ben Nicholson. A film made in 1957 about him, Soulages and Viere da Silva, titled’ Three Artists From Montparnasse’s’  they were the centre of the École de Paris movement  at the time.

‘Bott’s style continued to develop throughout his career and in the 1960’s and the 1970’s, he embarked on two major pictorial series, namely Espaces Concertés and Cathédrales.
