Short must have made this mezzotint when he was quite young. He possibly made a copy of a watercolour by Muller which was then accessible in the British Print Room. Henderson bequeathed his collection of work by Muller on his death in 1878. This date corresponds to the date in the plate. Scarce.
W.J.Muller, British 1812-1845. A son of a Prussian, his father was the curator at Bristol Museum. Muller was a painter of landscapes and figures and his work was known as of the ‘ Bristol School’. He travelled widely throughout Europe and produced a lot of work. Muller died at a young age and it was after his death when his work became highly collected and sought after. John Henderson (1797–1878),a English collector of works of art, left a large collection of Muller’s work to the British Print Room.
