James McNeill Whistler ‘The Blacksmith, 1895/96’



James McNeill Whistler transfer lithograph printed in black ink, with stumping. The lithograph is printed on fine handmade laid paper which is watermarked  O.W.P & A.C.L.  One of only 37 impressions which was printed by Goulding in 1903, the stone was erased the same year.  A  posthumous edition. Scarce.

Reference: Chicago 127 III/III; Levy 128; Way 90:Spink, Stratis & Tedeschi state that there were three lifetime states. Way records that there were 10 impressions of the first state; four impressions of the second state; 15 impressions of the third state.
