A collection of correspondence between Sven Berlin and Mayes of Southampton. Relating to the 1963 show of Sven berlin at the mayes Department store November 21st to December 10th (1963). Southampton: Mayes., 1963. First edition. A card flyer for the show printed in red with tape marks. A typed letter from Berlin to the publicity manager at Mayes Department show, regarding the forthcoming show with two hand-written lists of works to be shown; with a typed list of works with prices annotated in ink by Berlin. A typewritted letter from Berlin to G.C.Hill of Mayes, dated 6 December 1963, thanking him for advising that the show is to be extended till after Christmas. A signed typed letter dated 17 November 1963 (marked ‘Copy, Final’ from berlin to The Editor of the Southern Evening Echo complaining of the poor and misleading article respecting the show at Mayes and asking that the letter be published by the Southern Evening Echo by the way of explanation and vindication, with a copy of the first draft with extensive ink annotations by Berlin and a cut copy of the letter as published.. With a short review of the show extracted from the Southern Evening Echo, Fridat November 22nd 1963 beginning ‘Ex-tramp, coal-Heaver, Labourer, Salesman, Soldier and clown, Sven Berlin now a famous and successful artist is holding a one-man exhibition at the sore of E.Mayes and Son . in High-Street, Southampton, accompanied by a photograph of Sven and Juanita Berlin at the show. With a signed typed letter from G.H.Hill, advertising manager of E. Mayes & Son, advising Berlin thta the show is to close on the 27th December and what arrangements have been made for storage and collection. With a signed typed letter from G.H.Hill, advertising manager of E. Mayes & Son inviting the artist to a cocktail party to celebrate the opening of the show on the morning of the 14th November. With a signed typed letter from G.H.Hill, advertising manager of E. Mayes & Son dated 4th December confirming the extension to the show and advising that following a complaint from Berlin the display of sculpture outside the Panorama Restaurant has been re-dressed.
