‘Keeping Cool at Lympne’ by Rex Whistler

Original drawing in watercolour over pencil by Rex Whistler.

Titled ‘Keeping Cool at Lympne’ in lower margin. There is light marginal spotting and a lot of light handling folds. On embossed head writing paper of The First Commissioner of Works.

Sheet size 245x195mm

Not in Whistler and Fuller but cf. nos 176 and 177 for other portraits of the same dated 1930, this possibly later, circa 1938. The subject is the novelist Mrs. Belloc Lowndes. Apparently Whistler stumbled upon her in a state of deshabillé on a hot day whilst staying at Port Lympne in the 1930s, and drew this immediately afterwards. From the collection of Keith Fletcher.
