Item details

First edition of this publication which was published in various editions, William Darton being the first. An attractive book with many engravings and with poems which, as The Dartons notes, are “addressed rather more to the nurse-maid than to Harry [and] give detailed advice on the upbringing of young children.” They begin with “Nurse s First Thoughts about her Baby,” Little Baby, just new born, Naked, trembling, and forlorn. . . proceeds through such thing as pinpricks, teething, learning to walk, warm feet, and on to telling stories, as “about a little boy who was afraid in the dark.” The Dartons H37(1), cites copies in a private collection and at the British Library (the latter is lacking its frontispiece). OCLC and JISC/COPAC seem not to add any others (UCLA has a circa 1840 edition), nor does Moon, John Harris, 24aA(bis).

Maria Arthington , a wealthy Quaker and mother to four children including Robert Arthington.
