Rhymes Without Reason by Mervyn Peake
Published by Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 1944.
First Edition
8vo. 39 pp. Bound in yellow cloth with light green/blue text on cover. Illustrated with sixteen brightly coloured and highly whimsical colour plates, one for each of the nonsense verses by Peake. The dust wrapper does have some small marginal tears and has been protected with a mylar layer and is not price clipped. On black flyleaf, a neat inscription E. Swann is written in ink and the Ex libris plate of C.H.L.Bledisloe . Peake was that rarity equally adept with the paint brush as with words. (The closest precedents might be Blake or Thackeray.)At the time this work appeared, though, Peake was far more established as a visual artist.
