David Muirhead Bone drypoint etching of the Old and New Gaiety Theatres etched circa 1903. Printed in sepia ink on good quality hand made laid paper. Signed by the artist in pencil. The signature is faint. I suspect it has been cleaned in the past. The sheet has small margins and has been paper hinged to a mount.

The etchings shows the demolition of the Old Gaiety Theatre in 1903 which was in the north side of the Strand on the corner of Aldwych and the Strand, which is now occupied by a hotel. The Theatre was built in 1868 but demolished in 1903, The New Gaiety Theatre being quickly rebuilt on the same site. The new Gaiety Theatre was itself demolished in 1956 after being unused since 1939.

Provenance: Barbara Cavanagh Collection. By the distinctive writing on the card mount I believe she purchased the print from Craddock and Barnard Print shop in Museum Street , circa 1980.
