Item details

John Russell, (British 1919-2008) contributed art criticism for more than a half-century to The Sunday Times of London and The New York Times, where he was chief art critic from 1982 to 1990. He helped bring a generation of post-war British artists to international attention. Russell also edited the Century Bulletin on behalf of The Century Association in 1981 and 2006, a New York organization of some two-thousand authors and artists. Russell wore two masks as an art critic: He was a champion of newer, younger artists like David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin, and was also an accomplished scholar of the Impressionists and subsequent modern movements. He married Rosamond Bernier in 1975 who was a lecturer and founder of the art magazine L Oeil. They lived in Manhattan, New York.
