SPENCER, Stanley

Study by Stanley Spencer for ‘Building of the Tower of Babel’

Study by Stanley Spencer, a drawing possibly for the ‘Building of the Tower of Babel, 1933’ this has been heightened with water-colour; there is a further sketch on a smaller scale of workmen and ladders. Also a fine study of animals marching towards Noah’s Ark. On verso is another study of men working by a house, with the studio stamp in lower corner.
The drawings were made on a board which is now quite acidic and a little brittle; Spencer had stuck a sheet on top of the board using tape, there is a square tape stain on the surface; there are some grease marks.
Sheet size 380 x 550mm (15.5 x 21.5 inches)
