First published in 1941; this is the first illustrated edition. 4to. 54pp. Bound in Blue boards which have uneven sunning, bleaching to the boards and along the spine. Beautiful colour frontispiece and other illustrations as woodcuts and drawings in the text by Peter Scott. Endpapers decorated with geese. The frontispiece portrait of Fritha is modelled on Scott’s first wife, novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard. Originally published as a short story in 1940 in The Saturday Evening Post before being expanded and published in book form in 1941. The central character, Philip Rhayader, was loosely based on Peter Scott who provided the illustrations for many of the editions from 1946 onwards.
