The design for a plate by Bell has a central motif of a head and shoulders of a woman with necklace, drawn in ink. It is painted in watercolour over primed circular paper base. The size is 230mm in diameter. The sheet has some cracking and a few areas of loss, is mounted on contemporary card support and is framed and glazed. Not dated but circa 1930. One of three designs from a collection of Bloomsbury material sold at Bloomsbury Book Auctions. Other material in the sale came from the collection of Rupert Doone, the partner of Robert Medley.
Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant designed a set of 50 dinner plates ‘The Famous Women Dinner Service’ for Kenneth Clark in 1932. This design is similar to one of the plates from that service.
