TWOHIG, Edward

Edward Twohig: Printmaker, teacher, curator and author, was born in Cork, Ireland in 1969. He trained at the Crawford College of Art and Design, in Cork, before specialising in etching and photography at Chelsea College of Art, London.

After his studies, Twohig combined teaching with painting and print making his own work, working tirelessly. He is currently a trustee of the Bankside Gallery in London. In 2016 he was elected a Member of Council at the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a Fellow in 2018 and in 2021 the R.E.’s Hon. Curator. In April 2019 after holding four solo exhibitions in Baku he was bestowed with Hon. Membership of the Academy of Fine Arts of Azerbaijan. Twohig is the first European to hold this honour.

His teaching career began as Artist-in-Residence at Harrow School before he became Head of Photography at Gresham’s School in Norfolk. Edward was Director of Art at Brighton College from 2000 to 2012 and at Wellington College from 2013 to 2017. He is presently the Head of Art and Director of Visual Heritage at Marlborough College. Twohig is an enthusiastic, high achieving and inspirational teacher. For him, teaching, collecting and creating each go hand-in-hand.

Twohig takes his inspiration directly from nature and the natural landscape in his painting, photography and print-making. He aims to capture the essence and spirit of a place which captivates him whether it be in Wiltshire, in Sussex, in the west of Ireland or the countryside of Azerbaijan and its capital city, Baku. Being an avid collector of modern British prints of works by Samuel Palmer, Whistler and Seymour Haden to present day, Twohig gains inspiration from these earlier masters of British print making to contribute to, innovate and extend the English pastoral tradition.

Works by Twohig can be found in the permanent collections of The British Museum; The Victoria & Albert, Ashmolean and Fitzwilliam Museums; The Royal Collection, Windsor Castle; Rye Art Gallery, in Sussex; the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland; School of Art Collection, University of Aberystwyth; University of the Arts, London; Museo des Belles Artes in Caracas, Venezuela; and the National Museum of Art of Azerbaijan, where he had a solo show in 2017.
