Description

Linda Gunn-Russell hand-made vessel signed and dated 1985 on verso. Hand made in red earthenware clay, finished with a engobe painted design surface, engobe being a coloured slip made with a flux. Signed ‘Linda GR’ and dated 1985 on base. In very good condition.

Linda Gunn-Russell    British 1953-

Linda Gunn-Russell ceramicist and teacher. She trained at the Camberwell School of Art (1971-75) and her early work consisted of slip cast and press moulded pieces. After leaving Camberwell she shared space in various studios in South London and taught pottery.

Her works is influenced painters such as Matisse and Liechtenstein and fashion. She plans most of her works on paper before committing it into clay. Her early work consisted of slip cast and press moulded but she started to use slabs to build flatted forms in shape of familiar objects such as teapots and jugs and made one-offs. Her work is earthenware (Low fired temperature) is decorated with slip painted decoration or sponged. She later used wax & paper resist decoration with colour glaze.  She is best well-known for her colourful, hand-built sculptural vessels, working in a flattened perspective trompe-l’oeil style akin to that of Elizabeth Fritsch. Accustomed pot shapes are flattened and distorted, challenging our traditional views of shape and perspective.

Her work can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection among others. She presently lives and works in Malaga, Southern Spain.

Having shared a studio with Linda many years ago in Clapham, I know she took a long time and a lot of care making these pieces.
