Description

Lisa Hammond milk jug made circa 2018. The jug has been made on a wheel, thrown and cut with a faceted design. Glazed with a tan soda slip and fired with salt vapour. Soda glaze is a type of vapour glaze created by introducing sodium carbonate (soda ash/ salt) into a hot kiln, which vaporizes and reacts with the silica in the clay to form a glassy, often unpredictable, surface, but a very durable surface finish. Signed near base. In very good condition.

Lisa Hammond MBE (British 1956-)

Lisa Hammond , potter and teacher. After completing a 1 year foundation course and a 3 year diploma in ceramics at Medway College of Art, Lisa Hammond set up her first pottery in 1980 aged only 23. In 1982 as a teacher at Goldsmith’s College, Hammond was able to introduce soda glaze into her work, its pitted texture still a feature of her pots today.

As well as exhibiting all over the UK, Hammond has had several very successful shows in Japan. She has spent 9 months in Sydney, Australia and has held teaching posts at Goldsmith’s College and Camberwell College of Art. She is an elected member of the Craft Potter’s Association and has had her work shown in the National Gallery, London and The Tate, Liverpool.

Hammond has championed the revival of studio pottery in the UK. She started ‘The Adopt a Potter Charitable Trust’ to raise money to fund apprentices to work with master potters. In 2017 she set up the ‘Clay College’ in Stoke-on-Trent and gained an MBE for all of her work in her field.
