Michael Cardew dish with a painted bird design in blue (Cobalt oxide) and brown (Iron Oxide). The dish has been made using a press mold in groggy type clay and a cream slip has been applied on top. Unfortunately this has been applied too thickly consequently there was stress in the firing and the surface has cracked. But the crack does not through the dish, it is just on the surface. Even the best potters sometimes have technical problems. Although with a serious firing fault, still a nice piece. Made circa 1965-see image from ‘Michael Cardew’ by B.Leach
