This photo-lithograph made by Spencer s friend, the artist Henry Trivick, and is taken from a set of drawings made by Spencer in the 1930s. Copies are held at the Stanley Spencer Museum in Cookham and are extremely scarce. Being a trail proof, it does not bear a Friary Studio stamp. I purchased these some years ago at Bonham’s s, Chelsea as part of a large lot, all of which were trial proofs with printer s directions.
The lithographs were produced after Stanley Spencer’s death – Trivick produced a number of lithographs from drawings in the collection to be sold to raise funds for the Gallery. The more sought after lithographs are those that Spencer produced under Trivick’s guidance at the Regent St Poly: The Marriage at Cana, Retrieving a Ball and Caroline Pullen.
